A recent study performed by iProspect and Jupiter Research shows that web users prefer organic search results over paid search results. In additian to this, users are far less likely to search beyond the first three results pages.
Almost 70% of users questioned said they would click a site from the first results page, around 92% selected a site from the first three pages.
The survey highlighted that search engine users are becoming less tolerant of irrelevant results. In 2002, 19% of searchers would venture past the third page, in 2008 this figure has now dropped to just 8%.
The majority of searchers (over 90%) who don't look past page 3 will then alter their search phrase to try to produce more relevant results. However, 23% of searchers will change their search phrase if they cannot find what they want on the first page.
This highlights the importance of good organic rankings for a wide range of relevant keyword phrases.
